Intersections of New Media, Interaction Design and Spatial Design

Intersections of New Media, Interaction Design and Spatial Design

This talk explores the blending of adjacent design industries to find a new form of what the Bauhaus called the Gesamtkunstwerk, or "total work of art," in modern times. It presents a direct challenge to the prevailing dogma of reductive design and hyper-compartmentalization in UX, arguing instead for a more ambitious and holistic practice. Drawing critical lessons from architecture as a form of tangible research, the talk makes the case for the primacy of form, at times inverting the famous "form follows function" mantra to unlock new possibilities. This multidisciplinary vision finds its ultimate expression at the intersection of new media art, spatial computing, and user experience. Using frameworks like Object-Oriented Ontology and methods like design fiction, designers can move beyond simply solving problems to asking critical "what if" questions. Ultimately, this is an attempt to craft a manifesto for designers to evolve from component-builders into world-builders, responsible for crafting not just interfaces, but total, meaningful realities.
